How to Read an Artificial Grass Specification Sheet

When comparing artificial grass products, buyers often receive specification sheets filled with numbers and technical terms. Understanding the main items can make it much easier to compare different turf options.

Pile Height

Pile height refers to the height of the grass fibers above the backing. Different applications may require different pile heights, so a higher pile does not automatically mean a better product.

Dtex

Dtex indicates the weight of the yarn. It is commonly used to describe artificial grass yarn specifications. However, Dtex should not be considered alone when comparing turf, because yarn structure and other specifications also affect the finished product.

Density and Stitch Rate

Density describes how many tufts or stitches are present within a certain area. Stitch rate is another important production parameter and is usually shown together with gauge when calculating turf density.

Two products with the same pile height may therefore look and feel quite different if their yarn and tufting specifications are different.

Gauge

Gauge refers to the spacing between tufting rows. Common specifications may be written as fractions such as 3/8, 5/8 or 3/4 inch, depending on the turf design.

Backing

The specification sheet may also list the backing construction, such as PP, mesh and coating materials. The backing helps hold the tufts in place and forms the base structure of the turf.

Look at the Complete Specification

No single number determines artificial grass quality. When comparing products, pile height, Dtex, density, gauge, backing and intended application should be considered together.

If you are unsure how to compare two specifications, sending both specification sheets to the supplier can make the discussion much clearer.
